MAORI CLUB

The Wellington Maori Club held the last monthly meeting of the 1939 session on Monday, when a good attendance of members and friends met to listen to a lecture on "Early Missionary Days" delivered by Mr. A» Morris Jones. The .speaker traced the progress of missions from the Bay of Islands and their establishment - in parts of the North Island. He related some interesting details of the work accomplished by the late Bishop Octavius Hadfield, of Otaki. . Early missionary work and how warring tribes were united in peace were among the subjects touched upon by Mr. Hapi Love. Lady Pomare exhibited . some fine examples of Maori weaving in the form of cloaks, baskets, and hats, and Mr. Hapi Love described to the audience the methods of preparation required for the various kinds of material woven by the Maori. Mr. W. W. Bird translated a letter, written in Maori by the late Dr. Featherston and addressed to Wi Tako Ngatata. Mr. Bird spoke of the elegance-of expression adopted by Dr. Featherston, which indicated a thorough knowledge of the Maori language. ■
