MALE CHOIR
UPPER HUTT CONCERT
The Upper Hutt Male Choir, assisted by the St. Patrick's College Orchestra, gave a very enjoyable concert at Upper Hutt last Tuesday evening. Conducted by Mr. S. W. Josland, the choir has reached a high standard of efficiency and had the assistance of some thirty local ladies. The . concert opened with the choral prologue "Salur tation," by S. R. Games, followed by "The Soldiers' Chorus"- (Faust) by Gounod, with full orchestral accompaniment. Both were stirringly sung, An orchestral humber, "Slow movement from' Second Symphony" (Beethoven) was well received by an apr preciative audience, and for a recall "Hungarian Melody," by Kala Bella, was played with emotional effect. A bracket of part songs for female voices, "Love Song," by Brahms, and "Pipers' Song," by Rutland Boughtbn, were rendered very colourfully. The choir then presented Franz Abt's beautiful little folk song, "Thuririgian Volkshed," followed by a humorous part song, -A Cat Tale," by Edward R. Hawley, and the rollicking chorus, "The Sprig of the Jolly Roger," by C. F. Candish. ; The second half opened with carols sung by the full choir, accompanied By the orchestra. A piano solo by Mrs; Frank Whiteman, "Seguidilla," by I. Albeniz, was one of the gems of the evening. For a recall she played "Sea Pieces No. 5," by Edward MacDbwell. A bracket of two carols by the full ,choir, "Lullaby my Viking", (Gustav Hoist) and the ancient' (fifteenth century) "Welcome Yule," by Parry, was followed by orchestral numbers, "To the Rising Sun" (Torguessoh) : and a march, "Blaze of Glory," by Holzman. A glee in five parts; "The Bells of St. Michael's Tower*" .by KayvettStewart, was followed by : a part song, mixed voices, and unaccompanied. The concert concluded with :a,chorus in six parts, with full orchestral, accompaniment. This was "Santus," from Bach's B Minor Mass. ■;'■ ': ■ v :••
