STUMP PLANTING

To;give atmosphere and authenicity to a pre-revolutionar log fort auilt for scenes in R.K.0.-Radio's "The First Rebel," 200 tree stumps had to be planted in the clearing near Sher wood Lake, California, where the set was erected. This was necessitated by the fact, that the fort. supposedly was built in virgin country in the 1760 sra in western Pennsylvania, and the timherused to build the fort was cut In'the surrounding country and on the'site of the fort itself. Not only did the tree stumps have to be set out around the fort,,but they had to match the logs used in the fort. The logs used to erect the fort were shipped from Pine Ridge on the western slope of-the high Sierras. As result, the stumps surrounding the fort had to be covered with specially-made casts of ihe'-bark of these timbers, and then tainted the same shade as the bark.
