OPENING DAY RACES

In keeping with the importance of the occasion, the opening of the twenty-first season of the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor-boat Club this week was completely successful. Of particular importance to the yachtsmen who participated in the day's racing was the weather, which happily failed to maintain Labour Day's reputation for wind and rain.

The racing programme was opened in the morning by the Tauranga class boats, this race being won by Matchbox, sailed by W. Petherick, who led throughout. Pee Wee was second and Scat third. There seems to have been a falling-off in the number of starters in this class of late, but the club is now doing its best to foster the class. The Damfino I was first in the Takapuna class race, with Scamper second and Swallow third. The best performance in this race was put up by Bruce Rough in the Scamper, which, after a good race, finished second. The Scamper was a new boat towards the end of last season, and when her new sails are properly blown in she should prove to be a formidable competitor. Another good performance was put up by Swallow, which, however, after lying second for a good part .of the race, dropped back towards the finish. The Idle Along race was won by Riptide, with Spitfire second and Vampire third. Riptide took the lead shortly after the start of this race and was never challenged, finishing • ljmin ahead of the second boat. Vampire and Belvedere, which were fairly well back at one stage, did very well to sail through the fleet, finally finishing second and third respectively. Particular interest was taken in the fourteen-footer race owing to the fact that two new boats, the Anival, a representative of the Royal .Port Nicholson Club, and the Louis, of the Evans Bay Club, were making their first appearances in competitive racing.
