RECRUITING
PERIOD NEARS END
WELLINGTON AREA
THE MEDICAL TESTS
The recruiting period for the special military force of 6600 officers and other ranks being formed for service within New Zealand or overseas will end tonight, and it appears likely that the final figure will be somewhere between 1500 and 1600. The 1500-mark had been passed by noon today, and there was still a steady trickle of men coming, forward at the time of going to press. The organisation built up by the No.' 5 area staff under Major F. W. Hunt to deal with the recruits, has proved extremely efficient; in fact, it was designed .to cope with three times the i number of men who have come for- j ward. The clerical staff has kept well i up with the work, and there is now I in existence a complete and carefully-! dissected filing system giving full particulars of each man, including civil occupation, previous military training, and whether single, married with no children or married with children. The results of medical examinations have also been similarly recorded. Of the men who enlisted in Wellington and the Hutt Valley approximately half have been passed as immediately fit for duty, an,d about 10 per cent, have been classed 'as permanently- unfit. The remainder have been declared temporarily unfit,. : principally on account of dental defects, and when those defects have been put right' the majority of them will be transferred to the fit for service class.
