SPIRITUAL DUTY

CLERGY DURING WAR

BISHOP'S INSTRUCTION

(Received September 12, 9 a.m.)

LONDON, September 11

The Bishop of Lichfield, the Rt. Rev. E. S. Woods, forbids the clergy of his diocese to join the army as combatants. He emphasises that the unique contribution the clergy are able to make in the national need is a spiritual one.

The Rev. Kenneth Stephens, a curate living near Stoke-on-Trent, has joined the army as a combatant because he feels it his duty to fight against German aggression. "I am a young man with no family ties," he said, "and I considered that as the country is in need of man-power I should offer my services."
