JAPANESE AWARD
PRESENTATION TO MAJOR KIRK
Mi*. K. Gunji, Consul-General ior Japan, today handed to Major J. R. Kirk, M.8.E., the award forwarded for him by the Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai (Japanese Cultural Sociey) of Tokio
In 1937 the Japanese . Cultural Society invited, papers upon the sub ject of friendly relations between Australia and Japan, and the paper oi Major Kirk received the award of the society's gold medal for that year, the medal being the gift of Princr Konoye, then Prime Minister of Japan An embargo on the export of gold prevented the authorities from send ing the gold medal, but several volumes of works dealing with Japanese subjects were dispatched direct to Major Kirk. Now the award has been completed by the reception of the society's certificate, and a beautiful and' costly piece of Japanese art in'the form of "a choice cloisonne (in Japan known as shippo) vase.
