FIRST WEEK ENDS

MELBA SCHOLARSHIP

Today's activities will conclude the ; first week of the Wellington Competi- . j tions Society's 1939 festival. A fairly [light programme occupied this morn- ; ! ing when four junior classes were completed by the judges. The afternoon'sevents included the first demonstration matinee which was Avell attended and also the appearance in the Concert Chamber and the Blue Triangle Hall of competitors in four classes, including- the Hamilton Dickson vocal scholarship for untrained voices, the contralto test solo, and the men's sacred solo. An attractive programme has been draAvn up for the evening concert programme tonight, and it is anticipated that the appearance of the four finalists in the Wellington section of the Melba Bequest Scholarship elimination contest Avill attract considerable attention. One of the four singers will be selected to sing again in Wellington on Thursday next in competition with selected vocalists from other parts of the Dominion. A final choice will then be made by the judge, and the.successful candidate Avill receive a free return trip to Melbourne where she will sing against Australia's best \?oices. Tonight's programme in the main hall will also include the dnals of the folloAving classes: —Character dance (6-8 years), operatic dance 18-IO), tenor test solo, and skipping dance (14-16). In the Concert Chamber Mr. R. Hardie Boys will judge the impromptu speech, impromptu debate, - and oration contests. TODAY'S RESULTS. Results of classes judged today are as follows:— Class 45. Girls' Song, 9 and under 12 years (33 entries).—Beatrice Taylor (Lower Hutt), 85pts, I*. Margaret Robson (Lower Hutt), 84pts, 2; Joan Casserley (Wellington), 82pts, 3. Very highly commended: Marian Farland (Vogeltown). Highly commended: Aylene Boate (Wellington), June Scott (Brooklyn), Fay Piatt (Hastings).. Class 46. Girls' Song, 7 and under 9 -years.
