An Afternoon at St. Alban's.

A coin afternoon was-held recently j in the Parish Hall of St. Alban's, Eastbourne, to assist Miss Solomon's work in social welfare among girls. Miss Lawson, enrolling member of the. local branch of the Mother's Union, was the hostess. The hall was filled to capacity. Vocal items were given by Mesdames Stewart, Ardrey, Johnson, and Foley. Two sketches were read by the "Kinemoa" Readers, the parts being taken by Mesdames Bennett and Ardrey, and Mesdames Kirker and Stewart. A "bring and buy" table was in the capable charge of Mesdames Pope and Macklin. Afternoon tea was.served by the members of the Mother's Union. Miss Lee, in the absence of Miss Solomon, gave a short talk on her experiences in social welfare among girls, and the Rev. C. R. Kreeft concluded the; function by thanking all those who had assisted in making it such a huge success. Friday Tea-hour Club. There was a good attendance at the Friday Tea-hour Club of the girls' department of the Y.W.C.A. yesterday. Those present decided on the. name of "Happy-go-lucky" for their club, and elected the following officers for the year:—President, Miss Mary Bennett; vice-president, Miss Sue Piper; secretary. Miss Julia Collinson; and treasurer. Miss Janet Lyons. The programme opened with a sing song led! by Miss Lola Chandler. A report from j the girls' council was given by Misses J. Collinson, J. Lyons, and J. Windgate, and included an announcement, of the coming members' recognition service to be held on September 19, all members of the girls' department joining in the ceremonial. Questionnaires concerning the forthcoming .Dominion! Girls' Conference were circulated Miss Jean Campbell, national girls' work secretary, who will be in charge of the large gathering, explained the purpose of the conference, and the need of getting every girls' point of view regarding the programme. . Miss M.j Saunders outlined the programme for the next week, which is to include a talk on "Charm" and a demonstration! of ballroom dancing. Lyceum Club Meets. i The annual meeting of the Lyceum Club was held this -week at the club, 115 Lambton Quay. A very successful financial year was concluded and it was decided to take an extended lease j ol the premises. Her Excellency. \.'*>-' countess Galway. is warden of the club, of which Mrs. K. At the close of formal business the president entertained at supper. Birthday Party. Mrs. I. Allan entertained a number of young people at a party recently in honour of her daughter Joy, who was celebrating her birthday. Mrs. Allan wore a graceful hostess gown of black georgette and the guest of honour was wearing a bouffant frock of primrose net and a turquoise belt. The party was given at Mrs. Allan's home, 40 Pirie Street, and the rooms were specially decorated in shades of blue and primrose for the occasion. Among those present were Misses Jacqueline Hayes, Patricia Wilkinson, Monica McDonald, Cecile Mack, Doreen McMahon, Kathryn Mack, Patricia Hunt, Jan Kelly, and Messrs. A. Toogood. H. Lockyer. -N. Toogood, B. Tyrell, F. Yule, P. Hayes, M. Baigent, R. Sanderson, and J. Morgan. Fourth Successful Year. The Johnsonville branch of the League, of Mothers held its fourth annual meeting recently in the Masonic Hall. There was a large attendance. A pleasing report of the year's activities was read by the secretary, and a satisfactory balance-sheet was shown. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs. R. Hogg; vice-presidents, Mesdames H. Johnson, Mcßride, Wolf, and S. Martin; secretary. Mrs. D. Cook; treasurer, Mrs. Ingoldsby; committee, Mesdames R. P Cook, Burnett, jun., Hunter, Harwood, Hopping. Hooper, Livingston* Mason Mclndoe, Shearer. Solly, Hobbs. and Ferguson. Mrs. Hogg thanked the committee and members for their cooperation during the year, and the choir for their services. A vote of thanks was passed to the speakers of the year, the Press, various organisations which had helped the branch, and Mr. F. A. Davis, honorary auditor. Solos were sung by Mesdames Prichard and Kettlewell, who each received a floral spray, and the choir sang two items. The "thought" for I the month was given by Mrs-. I. Martin. Afternoon tea was served. Drill Parade. A meeting of the Wellington South Nursing Division was held recently at the St. John Ambulance Brigade rooms, Vivian Street. A list of public duties during the Centennial Exhibition for which members had voliin-

teered was .drawn up. All art union ticket books were called in, and it was proposed to approach a trained nurse with the request that she should attach herself t° the division as advisory division nurse. Miss Harrison was accepted as a probationary member, and an invitation was received from the Wellington Suburban Nursing Division to attend a doctor's lecture in St. Thomas Hall. After the business had been finalised, all divisions paraded for drill practice under the instruction of Mr. Elvines. National Reserve Celebration. On August 17 the Seatoun branch of the Women's National Reserve celebrated its nineteenth anniversary by holding a most enjoyable afternoon in the Masonic Hall, Seatoun. A large number of guests attended. A birthday cake and a ham* were donated by Mrs. A. McVicar and Mrs. R. Semple respectively, and the proceeds from these gifts augmented the nursery fund to a considerable extent. An interesting address was given by Mrs. Gibbons on the valuable work being done by the Residential Nursery in caring for the children of sick mothers. A competition, musical and elocutionary items, and afternoon tea brought a very successful function to a close. Industrial Films at a Party. On Thursday many members of the retail hosiery trade in Wellington were entertained by the management of Prestige (N.Z.) Ltd. at a social picture evening held in the inner lounge of the Empire Hotel. During the even-; ing films were shown dealing with, modern methods of hosiery manufac- j ture. Cocktails and supper were served during the evening and at its conclusion a vote of thanlcs from the visitors was moved by Mr. R. D. Thompson, manager of the D.I.C, and responded to by Mr. W. Thorpe, managing director of Prestige (N.Z.)- Ltd. Tea Dance on Thursday. The Truby King Club's tea dance, which has been arranged for Thursday, August 31, at the Majestic Cabaret, promises to be an entertaining affair. A feature of the evening will be the fur parade, the mannequins being Lorna Adams. Barbara Joyce Phelan, Nola Lawson. Hazel Robinson, Ruth Skerman, and Betty Souter. This floor show has been arranged by Mrs. H. Ainslie. Many parties have already booked their tables, and reservations may be made through Miss Joy Coad, [ secretary, or by winging 53 288.
