DEFENCE OF AUSTRALIA

SHOCK FORCE PLAN

14,000 MEN TO BE RECRUITED

(Received August 24, 9.15 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. A shock force of 14,000 men is being recruited from voluntary militia under a plan announced by the Prime Minister, the object being that it should act as a covering force to protect vulnerable points at the first sign of aggression. Pending general mobilisation of the militia, the plan has been substituted for a standing army proposal recommended by the Inspector-General of the Australian Forces, Lieutenant-General Squires, and rejected by the Commonwealth Government last month. The camp period will consist of special intensive training for 32 days a year. Following consultations between Federal Ministers and senior defence officers it was stated that the procedure to be adopted in an emergency had been carefully defined. The Premier, Mr. R. G. Menzies, said the necessary precautions could be taken immediately.
