CLYDE QUAY SCHOOL

EX-PUPJLS' ASSOCIATION

SUCCESS OF THE JUBILEE

The annual meeting of the Clyde Quay School Ex-pupils 1 Association was held last week at the school. In the unavoidable absence of the president, Dr. D. Macdonald Wilson, the chair was occupied by Mr. F. Wilton. There was a fair attendance of members. The report and balance-sheet covered the celebrating of the school's jubilee year. Great satisfaction was expressed with the position disclosed. The future activities of the association were discussed fully. Owing to the absence through sickness of several of the executive officers, it was decided to hold over the election of officers to an adjourned meeting to be held on Wednesday, at 7.30 p.m. "It was highly gratifying to the members of the committee and a full reward for the work involved in the organising of the jubilee celebrations that ex-pupils of the school rallied round in such large numbers, while it was evident from the enthusiasm displayed that the decision to mark the occasion met with the approval of all concerned," stated the annual report. The balance-sheet showed that the year commenced with a credit balance of £6 13s 4d, and after expending the sum of £107 19s 3d; the present credit balance was £29. 11s Id. The report recorded with regret that Mr. W. T. Grundy, the first headmaster of the school, did not survive to take part in the jubilee celebrations, to which he had been looking forward so keenly. His untimely death, two months prior to the date fixed for the commencement of the celebrations, at the age of 87, was a sad blow, which ■ at first threatened the abandonment of the jubilee plans, but it was felt | that in carrying on the committee would be observing the wishes of Mr. Grundy. Eegret was also expressed at the death during the year of one of the early teachers, Mr. A. Erskine. • "Now that the jubilee celebrations are over," stated the report, "it is the opinion of the committee that some permanent memorial to the early masters, who laid the foundations and established the traditions of the school, should be erected., and this proposal is recommended for the serious consideraof members. "It is impossible to mention each of the ex-pupils who contributed so generously financially and by other means to the success achieved during the past year, but ft is felt that the assistance of others should be mentioned, and in this connection thanks are expressed to the Minister of Education, the Wellington Education Board, the School Committee, the headmaster and staff, ex-teachers, the Home and School Association, and the ministers of various denominations who conducted the services at the De Luxe Theatre, and Messrs. H. F. Wood and Reg Maddams. The work performed by the ladies' committee and the social and dance committee also calls for high praise. In conclusion, the report expressed the hope that the efforts made in the past would be continued by the younger members coming forward.
