EXCHANGE PROBLEM

MANUFACTURERS' POSITION

Some of the difficulties confronting manufacturers, and in particular the present position of sterling exchange jand the procedure which the Reserve Bank had been obliged to adopt in relation to allocation, were pointed out lo the acting Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) and the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) by a deputation from the New Zealand Manufacturers Federation which waited upon them yesterday. The deputation stated that it realised • the present difficulties of the Government and was not anxious to embarrass it, but manufacturers were very worried over the situation that had now arisen. The Ministers promised that an explanatory statement would be issued by the Government as suggested in order that all concerned would liave a clear understanding of the procedure that was being followed. They stated also that they would do everything possible to clarify the position for the benefit of those who held licences and ! needed goods for carrying on the production of the country.
