Special forecast for Wellington:—

A temporary change to moderate southerly winds probable.

Weather unsettled with intermittent rain, but improving during tomorrow.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at»noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for northerly winds at first from Cook Strait northward, but a change in wind direction to between west and south is likely to be general within about twenty-four hours. Winds will be mainly moderate to fresh in force. The weather at first will be unsettled generally with intermittent rain in most places. Some snow is probable on the ranges and possibly on low levels in the far south. Conditions, however, should gradually improve tomorrow, and temperatures will become cooler.

A depression is still located over the South Island, and there has been a slight fall in pressure over Tasmania. A new feature in the meteorological situation is the development of a disturbance in the vicinity of Lord Howe Island. Moderate to strong northwesterly winds have prevailed from Cook Strait northwards, while over the South Island winds have been light to moderate and variable, with southerlies predominating at timdSfc In eastern districts the weather has been fair to cloudy with occasional showers. Elsewhere it has been cloudy to overcast with intermittent rain and a few thunderstorms. Last night there was a temporary improvement over the Auckland Peninsula, but this morning the weather was again cloudy to overcast generally, rain being widespread, especially in western and centi-al districts. Cape Maria Van Diemen reports a fall of 30 points, Cape Egmont 52, Foxton 125, and Puysegur Point 57, while on the East Coast Castlepoinr has had 40 points and Nuggets 35. Temperatures have been moderate to cool, with further frosts last night in the south.

Auckland had a changeable morning yesterday with a few light showers, but the afternoon was fine. Temperatures were mild, 61.3 degrees being the maximum and 51.6 degrees the minimum. The moderate to fresh west-north-west wind which prevailed yesterday had backed by this morning to the north, and the sky was again cloudy. Wellington's weather was mainly cloudy to overcast with a moderate to strong north-westerly wind. Heavy rain totalling 30 points fell between 4.30 p.m. and 5 p.m. and there weiv further showers last night. The total fall at Kelburn up to 9 a.m. today was one of 42 points. Temperatures yesterday were cool, with 53.6 degrees as the maximum and 47.3 degrees the minimum. The weather this morning was still unsettled and of the northwesterly type, and intermittent rain continued throughout the morning.

Christchurch had a variable sky during the morning, but the afternoon and evening were cloudy to overcast. A moderate to fresh north-easterly wind prevailed during the day, but by midnight the wind had changed to a westerly. Temperatures were moderate, with 47.8 and 36.7 degrees as the maximum and minimum respectively, and there was a frost last night of five degrees. Dunedin had a calm and sunny day with moderate temperatures, but cloud increased in the late afternoon. During the night there was intermittent light rain which totalled 27 points. The weather this morning was unsettled with a light southerly wind.
