TAXI FARES
INCREASE UNLIKELY
'It seems improbable that taxi fares in Wellington will be increased to meet the added burden of the new petrol tax. As fares are fixed by the City Council, approach will have- to be made to that body for permission to increase them, but as yet there is ho indication that such a move is contemplated. A meeting of directors of the Wellington Co-operative Taxi OwnerDrivers' Association, held last night, decided against asking for permission to increase fares. It was suggested that the extra cost imposed by the new tax could be largely met by better organisation and elimination of wasteful competition. Although fares had been increased in Christchurch, conditions there were entirely different. Wellington, moreover, had had an increase in taxi fares little more than fifteen months ago. LOWER HUTT ALTERATIONS. Alterations have been made in the fares charged by the Lower Hutt taxis., Hitherto Is for the first mile has been charged for three passengers, compared with Is for the first half-mile for two passengers in Wellington. The Ldwer Hutt fare has now been raised to Is 6d for three passengers for the first mile, each mile thereafter beins charged for at the rate of Is.
