TRAFFIC CONGESTION
(To the Editor.)
.Sir, —The motor traffic in this city has reached a stage when it must be kept moving with a minimum of delay or hindrance, otherwise traffic jams quickly occur. The traffic officer on point duty is the only solution. Traffic lights on busy intersections tend to retard traffic and cause unnecessary traffic jams; in this respect I think every motor driver will agree. Auckland City experimented with traffic lights but I understand that they have now again reverted to manual traffic direction as the traffic lights were hopeless. If the Wellington City Council allows more traffic lights to be erected at various intersections, and additional tram tracks to be laid down, it will be a bad look out for other vehicular traffic making use of the city streets. Does the traffic department of the City Council take the attitude that it is easier to watch the traffic go by than to direct it by traffic inspectors? If so, let the control go back to the Police 'Department, and one would immediately find a vast difference. Trusting, Sir, that some others will take this matter up with a view to having constructive criticism ventilated. —I am, etc., BLOCKED.
