TREES PLANTED
Arbor Day was duly celebrated at Wellington College on Tuesday, when a pohutukawa tree was planted by Mr. W. H. Denton, an old boy, and a governor of the college. The ceremony took place at noon. Short addresses were given to the assembled pupils by the headmaster, Mr. W. A. Armour, and by Mr. L. McKenzie, chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. W. H. P. Barber, and Mr. Denton.
In the course of his remarks, the headmaster stated that all four members of the Board .of Governors who were present were great tree lovers, and all made gardening one of their principal hobbies. Mrs. Knox Gilmer recently won the Loder Cup, while Mr. Barber received first prize for the best rock garden in the district la addition to the ceremonial tree, nearly 500 shelter trees are being planted in the college grounds.
At the invitation of the headmaster, parents of pupils attending Wellington College were invited t a meeting and social gathering on Tuesday evening. About 130 parents attended. The meeting was held in the gymnasium, which, had been most comfortably prepared for the occasion, and supper arranged by Mrs. Armour was held in the recreation room, which was nicely decorated with Iceland poppies.
The headmaster presented the bal-ance-sheet for the last garden party, showing a profit of £132 7s Bd, and he stated that it was expected .Very soon, to proceed with the erection of three fives courts. Other matters touched on by him in the course of his, remarks included the effects of the radio on- school pupils, destination of pupils leaving school, billeting for the Exhibition, good-will visits,. the development of musical education in the college, the school uniform and dress, the Beetham Scholarships, the decline in school pupils, school lunches, and cafeteria. A "talk was given by Mr. T. Brodie on early development of college playing areas and some notable personalities in college history. Mr. J. R. Cuddie showed three interesting films entitled "Modern New York," "String Instruments in the Orchestra," and "A Voyage Round the Horn."
Owing to the unsuitable state of the grounds at Wellington College, the annual football match between Silverstream and Wellington College first fifteens had to be postponed. At first it was thought that the match, would be played next Tuesday, but as this date has now been found unsuitable, the game will be played on tha Wellington College grounds on We* nesday afternoon.
