AUSTRALIAN BOWLING CARNIVAL
The Victorian Bowling Association is making great preparatibnS .for. the Australian Bowling Carnival to be held in Melbourne from December 26, 1939, to January 6, 1940. It is anticipated that more than •£ 1000 \Vill be spent on the carnival organisation, fend the entertainment of visitors. These nation-wide ■ championships are only held biennially-—and in (Bach of the States in rotation. During the last carnival held in Melbourne in 1927-28 there were 1170 entries for the singles and 1256 competitors in the rink event-—a record for the Southern. Hemisphere. An even more impressive demonstration of the size of the tournament and of the organisation required is the fact that' 1316 singles matches were decided in one day. This wa§ a world's record but it will probably be equalled —if not beaten—at the forthcoming carnival. =* • Melbourne .is extraordinarily well served with rinks. It posseses 643, the largest number in Australia, and, 500 of them are lit for play by electric light. All the Melbourne greens are sown with English grass and they have no equal in any other part of the world. Moreover, they have all been closed down this year for five months so that I they can be specially prepared for the [ carnival.
A most cordial welcome awaits all visitors, particularly those from overseas, and it should be emphasised that all competitors are guaranteed a minimum of five games in the rinks, six games in the pairs, and one in the singles.
