Miss Joan' Rawson, M.A.^A.L.A., daughter of the late Judge Rawson, has received advice from London that she ' has been successful in gaining ths F.L.A. Johnson, factory representative in New Zealand for the Dunlop Rubber Company, left Auckland by the Monterey today to join the Orama at Sydney for England. Mr. P. J. O'Brien, taxidermist at the Canterbury Museum, has been awarded a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to visit American museums and study taxidermy there. He will leave New Zealand" in December, and will be away about l(f months. This is the second grant rec« ntly made by the corporation to a member of the "" staff of the Canterbury Museum. The curator (Mr. R. A. Falla) is at the 'moment away on a visit to Britain and the Continent studying modern museum practice. . Mr. Clifford Sanderson, a young architect who left Dunedin some years ago and who has been doing postgraduate study in town planning at the London University for the past three years, has been awarded the. diploma in town planning of that university. After graduating at tha Auckland University College, Mr. Sanderson, who is a son of Mr. L. Sanderson, of Dunedin, was awarded the travelling scholarship in architecture in 1935 and left for London to gain further experience in his profession. Mr. L. C. Rossiter, general manager of Messrs. -W. and T. Avery (N.Z.), Ltd., left by the Wanganella yesterday on a business trip to Australia. Mr. J. H. Mason, of Wellington, managing director of J. C. -Williamson (N.Z.), Ltd., left for the north by the Limited express last night. Mr. A. B. Fuller, governing director of Fullers' Theatres, Ltd., left for the north by the Limited express last . night. Mr. W^ E. Mr. George Aaron Wood, who died at Christchurch on Sunday in his seventy-ninth : year, was chairman of ■ the Hokitika Harbour Board for a number of years, and had also served . on the Borough Council, being at one time chairman of the reserves and other committees. He was born in London in 1860 and arrived in New Zealand in March. 1879. He first settled in Kumara, and in 1893 went to Hokitika, where he established the first white* bait canning factory in New Zealand, j, ■Later, factories were opened at Westport and Paringa. In 1908, his canning activities were extended to the crayfish market, a factory being> established at Akaroa for the preparation and canning of this fish. Shipping was his keenest hobby. In 1921, Mr. Wood purchased the. well-known coastal steamer, John Anderson, which today continues her work, trading between _ the various bays of Banks Peninsula. ■ Later he purchased the Orewa for' the Akaroa trade. This boat has since been sold. In 1929, Mr/ Wood took up residence in Christchurch, but still continued his canning works in Paringa. He is survived by his widow, three sons—Mr. A. E. Wood (Palmer-, ston NorthV Mr. G.-E. -Wood (Sprey- '. don), and Mr. M.'J.Wood (Wanganui), and two daughters—Mrs. H. D- Lougher (Wellington) and Mrs. J. M. Fraser (St. Martins). Mr. A. Derbie, Invercargill, general manager of the Southland Frozen Meat Company, arrived at Wellington from the south yesterday. Mr. W. R. Carey, Christchurch, mana* ger of the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company, Iftd., returned south, last night., Mr. H. fD. Acland, Christchurch, arrived at Wellington from the south yesterday. Mr. T. W. Thomson, of Drayton, Jones, Ltd.,' Christchurch, arrived from the south yesterday and left by the Wanganella for Sydney. Mr- Jacob Elliott,-* a memher of the Railway Appeal Board, arrived from Auckland today by train to attend a sitting of the board. Sir George and Lady Shirtcliffe left . Wellington by the Wanganella last night for a holiday visit to Sydney. They expect; to be away for about six weeks. Lieutenant J. A. Harper, Leading Supply Petty Officer F. G. Cain, Lead- v ing Supply Assistant R. F. Hooper, Chief Petty .Officer H. W. J. Margetts, and Mr. H. Guy, engine room artificer, members of the old commission of H.M.S. Leith, left Wellington by the Wanganella for Sydney last night. They will join the Orama at Sydney 4 fof England.
