MERCHANT SHIPS
PROVISION AGAINST ATTACK
"A beginning has been made in New Zealand with the stiffening of certain selected merchant vessels on the New Zealand register to take defensive armament in the event of an outbreak of war," said the Minister of Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) in an interview yesterday. "It is for this reason that a sum of £310Q has been included in the Estimates just brought down." "A ship W fitted could not take the offensive, as that would mean piracy," Mr. Jones added. ''The provision is being made simply for the protection of such merchantmen against attack."
