HOAX SUSPECTED
SHIP ON FIRE AT SEA
CONFLICTING MESSAGES
(Received August 4, 1.30 p.m.)
NEW YORK, August 3,
Reports alleged to be from the British freighter Dunkwa (3789 tons) were received stating that the ship was on fire at sea. Investigations led to the belief that the messages were a hoax.
This morning a message was received stating that the crew had taken to the boats, and that the ship was expected to sink within an hour. It was added that all 38 on board were safe except for the operator.
Four ships have begun a search,
A ship and an aeroplane, on reaching the last-given position of the Dunkwa, reported that they failed to sight either the freighter or her crew. Coastguard officials expressed the belief that the distress signals were probably a hoax perpetrated by some amateur since several discrepancies appeared in the various messages from the vessel, particularly, also, since Lloyd's have confirmed that the Dunkwa is at present at Rotterdam.
