GARDEN CITY PLAN

FIRM IN MELBOURNE

TO COST £1,500,000

(Received August 3, 9 a.m.)

MELBOURNE, August 2.

The most ambitious garden city plans yet attempted in Australia will be undertaken shortly by Dunlop Perdriau, Ltd., Avhich proposes to transfer its Port Melbourne Avorks, Avith 2200 employees, to a site in Beaumaris oa the bay side, 12 miles from the city.

The cost of the undertaking is estimated at £1,500,000. It Avill include a new factory, 1200 houses, shops, a hospital, a theatre, and a school.

The latest toAvn-planning ideas have been adopted in the scheme, Avhich is the result of many months' investigation. The area of land concerned comprises three-quarters of a square mile and the site lends itself to landscape planning. Recreation and sports grounds will be a feature, and safe bathing beaches a natural attraction.

The object is to make the model town a complete self-contained unit for AA'ork, living, and play. Novel housing plans include a proposed community laundry service and reticulation for a hot water service in insulated pipes from a central heating station.

The company Avill probably be unable to give its employees lower rents than they are paying at present, but the scheme Avill give them better conditions at the same rents, with a substantial weekly saving of fares.
