PERSONAL SCALES

BUDGET INCREASES

Comparisons of the income tax paid on individual gross, or assessable, incomes under the scale existing before the Labour Government's first amendment made in 1936, the scale established by that amendment, "and the new rates announced in the Financial Statement on Tuesday night are given by the "New Zealand Herald."

In calculating the 1936-36 figures allowance has been made for the amount paid in unemployment taxation, which, at that time, was exempted from income tax. The personal exemption, reduced to £200 in the latest revision, has been deducted, as has the £50 allowed a married man in respect of his wife. Under the 1935-36 law these two were reduced a u the income rose, until finally they were extinguished. In the 1936-37 and 1939-40 calculations they ara allowt' throughout, irrespective of the level of income, as is the exemption of £50 for each child in all three instances.

No account _\as been taken of such payments as life insurance premiums, contributions to superannuation funds, and similar expenditure on which exemption may be claimed. iAI incomes are treated as if wholly earned by the taxpayer. Unearned or investment in come is charged at rates one-third greater than those shown. The table giving the taxation of a single man, without dependants, who ,is assessed on the highest individual scale, is as follows: —
