BASKETBALL

SEVEN-A-SIDE

SENIOR ROUND

OPENING GAMES

The unprecedented number of fine Saturdays this season has caused the senior A championship to be decided very early, and the suggestion that a third round be played under the seven-a-side rules meeting with approval by all senior teams except University, the first round was played on Saturday. University advised that as they had had to start their season so early because of the inter-university Easter tournament, their senior A team was Withdrawing for the rest of the season.

Training College did well to hold Wellington East O.G. to a 19-all draw, their advantage lying in a better understanding of the seven-a-side game. 'Wellington East O.G. showed stronger individual play, but this threw too much work on definite players who found it difficult to keep up the pace. At half-time Wellington East O.G. led by 9 goals to 7, but in the second spell, Training College played more confidently in the forward third, and as a result secured better shooting positions. Training College defence again failed to make the most of their interceptions, too often letting the ball out when it could , have been caught and thus giving Wellington East forwards the throw-in. These invariably were turned to East's advantage in gaining a satisfactory position in front of the goal.

The Awatea-Island Bay O.S. game showed a complete reversal in the two' spells of play. At the commencement of play Awatea could do nothing right, while Island Bay played exceptionally well, their forwards' positional play being almost faultless. Half-time came with Island Bay leading by 10-4. In the early part of the game J. Crewes played centre, and her change-over to right wing centre immediately had its effect on the team-work of Awatea. Persistent and successful attacks soon evened the score and demoralised Island Bay, the final score standing at Awatea 21, Island Bay O.S. 14. SENIOR B GRADE. Island Bay 0.5., leaders of section I of the senior B grade, were defeated by Wellington East O.G. in a close game won by the odd goal, while Aspro, leading in section 2, again put up a big score, winning from Dental Clinic by 42 goals to 12. Present indications are that Island Bay O.S. and Aspro will meet in the senior B final, and Island Bay forwards will need to be m practice to keep up with the highscoring Aspro players. THIRD GRADE TOURNAMENT. Taupo and Aspro came through to the final for the King's Birthday tourney, but owing to failing light this could not be played on Saturday, but will be played later in the season.
