LATE MR. EWING

TRIBUTE TO HIS MEMORY

The heads of the Government Department in which he had served, his former colleagues in the Government Service in Wellington, representatives of Rugby football and amateur athletic activities in this city, as well as many personal friends, attended the funeral yesterday afternoon of Mr. R. G. Ewing, who from 1932 to 1935 was l# the secretary of the Kiwi Amateur Athletic Club in Wellington and' afterwards the secretary of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Cen tie. Mr. Ewing's death occurred in the Waikato Hospital, his body being brought to Wellington, and a service, was held here in Morris's chapel. The service was largely attended. A fine tribute was paid to Mr. Ewing's memory by the Rev. N. F. E. Robertshawe, who conducted the service. One came into the world with nothing and took nothing out, he said. Greatest of all that one could leave when one departed this life was a good character and the respect of one's fellow-men. Mr. Ewing by his character had fully^ earned that respect. The pall-bearers were Messrs. F. Bond, D. G. Johnston, A. Hose, and A. D. Rowse, representing athletic and football interests, Mr. J. Shennan (a cousin), and Mr. C. Trott (brother-in-law). Among those present were Messrs. J. W. Heenan (Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs), W. A. Jameson (physical welfare branch of the Department of Internal Affairs), J. Prendeville (New Zealand Rugby Union), G. F. Bothamley, G. H. Weir, H. S. Abel (Wellington Amateur Cycling Centre), P. Verschaffelt, W. F. Ingram, A. C. Kitto (president) and other members of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre, H. I. Austad and F. M. Reid (New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association), K. M. Poulton ("Evening Post"), L. J. Schmitt, general manager, and S. J. Collett, assistant general manager of the Tourist and Publicity Department, and members of the head office staff of the Department, R. W. Coupland, district manager, and members of the staff of the Department's Wellington office. After the service in the chapel the funeral left for Karori Cemetery.
