SYNOPSIS OF. LAST 24 HOURS

The, anticyclone from the Tasman Sea moved on to the extreme south of New Zealand terday afternoon and is still located there, while a series of shallow depressions formed to tha north of Cape Maria Van Diemen and moved away in a south-easterly direction. Strong southerly to south-easterly winds .to gales -prevailed between Banks. Peninsula, and East Qap« and about Tfcranakl, but decreased during the night. Elsewhere there were moderate southeasterlies 'which gradually became variable south of Westport and Kuikoura. The weather was fine in Westland but. elsewhere was cold with frequent showers of hail in most districts and some further snow.' Conditions improved oVernight, but, this morning there were still scattered showers, in eastern .-.districts* and the far north. Frosts were recorded in. Westland, Otago, and Southland. • ,
