BOROUGH MARKET

TWO RAILWAY STATIONS PARALYSED

DAMAGE TO BRIDGE

(Independent Cable Service.)

(Received July 21, 9 a.m.)

LONDON, July 20,

Two of London's biggest stations, Charing Cross and London Bridge, were paralysed last evening when flames from a fire which destroyed half the borough market spread to Southern Railways' main electric cables near London Bridge. Cracks were later discovered in the brickwork of the bridge. A thousand passengers were stranded between 11 p.m. and 12.35 a.m., when the current was restored. The flames at one stage threatened Southwark Cathedral.

Three hundred firemen fought the outbreak.
