TITAHI BAY STREET LIGHTS

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —May I trespass on your space just once more to enable me to reply to Mr. Bothamley's letter. I might mention it has always been the policy of this association to refrain from public correspondence, except in explanatory matters and in matters of selfdefence such as in this case. There is no need for myself or any of my colleagues to visit the council's office for the purpose of refreshing our memories, as we have our own file of correspondence to refer to. Apart from that, the circumstances of the visit is "... engraven on the minds of all of us. ' When the chairman of the MakaraCounty Council and the three members of his council visited Titahi Bay, neither Mr Bothamley nor Mr Mexted (who are the representatives of the Titahi Bay and Porirua Ridings) was present, so really Mr. Bothamley could ~ know very little, except from hearsay, of what happened on that Saturday morning. I notice Mr. Bothamley does not enlighten us as to who authorised the ' removal of the light from Tireti Street :. *-. I also notice he reproaches me for forgetfulness and am wondering whether he himself has forgotten that he is & '„' member of the association's executive committee; for, if he has not forgotten. '.''. then he must know perfectly well that the erection of a light in its pre- .y sent position was never at any time discussed, or even thought of, and the minutes, which are accurately kept, do not refer to this locality at all. I do not think any imaginary inter- ' ference with the linesmen worth y bothering about, as we know very well the Power Board's emoloyees carryout their instructions from headquarters most rigidly and are not likely " to be swayed from them. "**■ We are of the opinion that this mistake is not incaoable of repair. It should not be viewed from a financial •-" aspect. It will certainly appease the minds of many people, and. after all, the cost will be very little indeed. I ' shall not impose on your soace fur- ' * ther. and. in conclusion, would like ta mention that members of my commit- -~ tee are not unmindful of the very great interest the Makara County '' Council has always taken in Titahi Bay ;'" affairs and- for its assistance when called upon.—l am. etc.,

L. U. CHAFFEY, Hon. Sec, Titahi Bay Progressive Association.
