NEW SECRETARY

PROTECTION SOCIETY WORK

There was a good attendance when the Society for the Protection of Women and Children met last week. The president, Mrs. B. L. Dallard, was in the chair. Owing to the late assistant secretary receiving an appointment to the Child Welfare Department, the emergency committee, Mesdames Dallard, Line, and O'Shea, was authorised to receive applications and fill the vacancy, Mrs. L, Long being appointed to the position from a large number of applicants.

Gratification, was expressed that the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, had given a grant : of £100 to the society, a letter of thanks being sent to the Minister. It was stated that the society needed every shilling, otherwise the work of the society would be greatly restricted, and, with cases increasing in numbers and urgency, this would mean great deprivation to those in trouble—particularly to the wives and children j who suffered most.

A letter was received from the superintendent of the hospital assuring the society, that the children's play area near the hospital would not be interfered with unless absolutely necessary for hospital use, and that due notice would be given and another site applied for. A letter was received congratulating the society on the letter sent to the Press on this matter.■ *; It was decided to devote a special meeting to the revision of the rules of the i society.

Several donations, with expressions of sympathy and appreciation of the; work of the society, had been received recently..?; The large number of cases which came before the society proves the great value and necessary chairac-i ter of the\work being done forithose* who would otherwise ■go unhelped.y«
