POLYGLOT STOICS
When the Rumanian editors who have been on a visit to Britain as guests of the British Council went to Stowe they were very greatly impressed. Tlie reason for this was not merely the imposing nature of this great eighteenth century country house turned into a modern public school, but the care and forethought that had gone to their reception. Mr. J. F. Rixburgh, the headmaster, had arranged for several French-speaking masters and members of the sixth form to show the Rumanian editors, who speak no English, over the house and grounds. The Rumanians were not a little surprised by the excellence of their guides' French. They were astounded that two of them spoke Rumanian as well. One of these is an English boy who has been brought up in Bucharest. The other is the son of M. Max Ausschnitt, one of Rumania's leading industrialists.
