CUP EVENTS HELD

PETONE RIDER'S FORM

; A 17-year-old rider, H. Laurie, scored well. 1 in the first of three races held on Saturday afternoon by the Petone Amateur Cycling Club , for a cup presented by Jlr. J. W. Krause. 1 Although competing against some seasoned performers, including A. Pennington, Laurie, from the l'.min mark, gained first place and fastest time. The distance was 16 miles. As five points each are given for first place and fastest time, he will liavo 10 points in hand when tlie next race,, one of 20 miles, is 1 held. Tlie distance of the third race will • be 25 miles, and the rider with the highest 1 aggregate in tlie three races will be tlie winner of the cup. There were nine starters and wea- ; tiler conditions were favourable. At the turn, the handicap men, headed by Laurie and E. Brown, were 15 seconds up on the scratch riders. The scratch riders made up leeway on the return journey, but were unable to catch the handicap riders, who finished fast with Laurie in front, and C. McGurk, who dashed up, one-fifth of a second behind, to fill second place and gain second fastest time. B. Brown was third. E. Johnson, an invitation rider from Palmerston North, raced very well to finish with the leaders, but as ho was not a competitor for the cup his placing was not counted. The three scratch men came down the home straight together, but almost on the line Pennington turned on a burst of speed which left the other fcvo behind, and gave him third fastest time. Results:—H. Pennington (scr), 41min 26see, 3. PONEKE CLUB. Riding from the smin mark, G. Howard won the Poneke Club's 35-miles race for the Walsh Cup, beating 11. Sparkes (Tmin) in the sprint. Fastest time, Ihr 30min 52 2-ssec, was made by K. Dutton, off the scratch mark. Several ' riders had machine trouble and a number were beaten by tlie distance. C. Sparkes and C. While the seniors were on their journey a 10-miles race for the juniors was conducted. This waa for points for the Loader Cup, and resulted In a win for Jack Sparkes, with P. Anderson next. I. Walsh made fastest and W. Goey second fastest time. The club will not hold a race next week because of the Palmerston-Bulls fixture that day. PORT NICHOLSON CLUB. With the object of giving junior riders experience in open company and tuition ln the finer points of road racing, the Port Nicholson Club held a 22-miles two-man time trial for seniors and juniors over tho club's course at Island Bay. The teams left at l^_min intervals, the actual riding time of both men deciding tho result. Though some juniors had difficulty in keeping up with their partners, the majority gave good performances. Teams were evenly matched, and there was little difference between the times of the first and last finishing pairs. W. Keighly and S. Webber rode a solid race to beat E. Robinson and E. Wagstaffe by 27 seconds. The chances of R. Hossler and G. Amey were spoiled somewhat when Arney fell in the first lap. However, they made up much of their lost time, and beat J. Wilson and D. Ogden for third place, and were only 10 seconds slower than Robinson and Wagstaffe. Detailed results: —W. Keighly and S. Webber, 60min 34sec, 1; E. Robinson and E. Wagstaffe, Glmin lsec, 2; G. Amey and It. Hossler, 61min Usee, 3. Withdrawals were 81. Schaife, who rode with K. Wilson, and P. McMasters (puncture), who was partnered by O. Disley.
