GERMAN MIGRANTS

FEWER FOR UNITED STATES

Described as the most complete statistics of their kind ever assembled, figures just released by the three major agencies aiding German refugees show that up to December 30, 1938, a total of 65,404 Germans have emigrated to the United States since the advent of National Socialism in Germany, says the "New York Times." The . figures were given out in a memorandum that will be widely distributed, the agencies said, "in order to present the true picture to the American public of refugee immigration to this country." The agencies are the National Coordinating Committee for Aid to Refugees and Emigrants Coming From Germany, 165 West Forty-sixth Street; the Committee for Catholic Refugees from Germany, 123 Second Street; and the American Committee for ChristianGerman Refugees, 287 Fourth Avenue. A fact seldom realised, the memorandum revealed, is that present emigration from Germany to the United States averages less than one-fourth the immigration in the fourteen years before Hitler came into power. From 1919 to 1932 the total immigration to this country from Germany was 426,326, or an average of 30,452 a year, it reported. For the six and a half years from July 1, 1932, there has been a net immigration of only 43,042 Germans to America. METHOD OF CALCULATION. The memorandum explained this figure was reached by deducting 22,362, the number of aliens who left the United States for Germany in the same period, from 65.404, the total number coming here from 1932 to 1938. "Thus," it said, "for the past six and a half years there has been an annual net immigration to this country from Germany of 6622 persons per annum." From the fiscal year starting July 1, 1932, to the fiscal year closing June 30, 1938, a total of 45,952 German refugees were admitted to the United States, it continued. An additional 19,552 German refugees were admitted for the six months ending December 31, 1938. "Assuming an immigration this year from Germany, including Austria, of 27,370, the total allowable under quota regulations, there will be in this country by June 30, 1939, less than 75,000 Germans who have come here in the seven years since the advent of National Socialism in Germany," the memorandum added. "For the last fiscal year, July 1, 1937, to June 30, 1938, there was a net immigration to this country from all countries of the world of only 42,685 persons. "For the six-year period, July 1,1932, to June 30, 1938, the years since the advent of National Socialism in. Germany, 4487 more aliens left thi: countzy permanently than were admitted for permanent residence." According to the memorandum, al?. the statistics are based on the official records of the United States Immigration and Naturalisation Service.
