SECOND ROUND COMMENCES

JOHNSONVILLE DRAW WITH WELLINGTON

On slightly slippery grounds, but with overhead conditions ideal, the second round of the Wellington Rugby Union's senior first division championship and the' Hardham Memorial Cup competition were commenced on Saturday afternoon. Wellington (the competition leaders) and Johnsonville, two of the six remaining championship contenders, met at Athletic Park, and in a stirring match the teams drew—6 points all. Poneke rather unexpectedly beat Athletic in a fairly high scoring match, and as a result Wellington now have a very useful five points lead on the ladder. Athletic, Johnsonville, and Petone, who beat Marist Bros. Old Boys by a point on Saturday, are equal in second place, Poneke are a point behind, and Marist Bros. Old Boys are a point behind Poneke.

In the Hardham Memorial Cup competition (for the bottom six teams in the first division) Wellington College Old Boys scored an excellent win over Oriental at Kelburn Park, Hutt beat University comfortably, and Eastbourne and St. Patrick's College Old Boys drew. A feature of the second division competition was the defeat of the leaders, Miramar, by Onslow in a close match.
