FAIR AND SALE OF WORK

(From "The Post's" Representative.)

j St. Paul's Hall, Waiwhetu, presented lan attractive appearance on Saturday afternoon when a fair and sale of work organised by the Epuni-Waiwhetu branch of the Labour Party was held. From the tops of slim Venetian poles white streamers, hung at intervals with bells of green and gold were caught up to the ceiling, and the well-stocked stalls arranged round the hall were decorated with swathings of scarlet and white. Business was brisk, games and competitions very popular, and a gipsy tent, presided over by a "wizard," formed a great attraction. Mr. H. Combs, member for the district, who was introduced by Mr. P. Dowse, chairman of the branch, opened the fair, and in a brief speech eulogised the untiring work of this branch of the party, and of the organisers of the afternoon's fair.

Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. G. Bell and Mr. H. G. Burrell, with the assistance of Mesdames H. Graham, A. Meiklejohn„ and H. Burrell. The first dance given in honour of Miss Joy August, the Eastern Queen in the Lower Hutt Municipal Band carnival, was held in the Birch Street Hall on Saturday evening, and proved most enjoyable and successful. So much was this the case that a repetition was asked for and voted upon, with the result that the promoters announced that another such dance will be given in the same hall on Saturday next. A happy atmosphere of enthusiasm and light-heartedness prevailed, and the numerous dancers showed their appreciation of the excellent music of the band by requesting many encores. Mr. R. Mac Murray was master of ceremonies. Supper was provided by the members of the ladies' committee and friends. The guest of honour, Miss Joy August, wore a charming gown of soft Chartreuse green georgette over satin, finished with a shoulder spray of apricot-tinted flowers. Miss Vivienne Piatt, the Western Queen, was also present. The committee comprised Mr. F. M. Ryan (chairman), and Messrs. R. McMurray, W Pugh, G. Kaye, W. Penhall, L. Gee, D. Gillies, R. Masters, J. August, E. Penhall, Elbe, and R. Smith (treasurer), and Mesdames J. E. August, P. Dowse, L. Gee, F. M. Ryan, E. Penhall, Misses J. Gardiner. S. August, R. Ryan, P. Penhall, and I. Trevethick.
