CONSOLIDATED INDUSTRIES
Emphasising that the proposed inquiry into the profits and general activities of Australian Consolidated Industries, Limited, would not be part of any deliberate policy of attacking Australian industries, or their legitimate protection, the Australian Minister of Customs, Mr. N. J. Lawson. said he would discuss with the chairman of the Tariff Board. Mr. H. McConachy, in Melbourne, the date for the opening of the inquiry, which would be public. The Government's poiicy was to develop Australian industries as rapidly and fully as possible, but it proposed investigating the affairs of several companies to protect the public against any possible exploitation by people who enjoyed substantial tariff protection, and as a legitimate means of reducing costs to industry which did not enjoy protection.
