MORE BACK-BENCHERS
Yesterday in the Mouse of Repre* sentatives gave backbenchers another opportunity fop airing their views on th§ Addpe§i4n»Eeply~ motion m^l the Opposition's no-conlidenee amendment, There was only one maiden speech, that of Wv, E>, C, Kidd (National, Waitaki), who affirmed that he had no hesitation in stating that when the Opposition became the Government it would put universal military training on the Statute Book. He showed that he was well informed on farming topics and followed party lines in criticising the Government's policy in regard to primary industry. An entertaining contribution to the debate was made by Mr, A, E; Jull (National, Waipawa), who proved himself completely at home in the Uouse by reason of his. previous terms as a member of Parliament, and who used metaphor and analogy freely to drive home his points, Mr. Jull was speaking for the first time in the present Parliament, and he sue* peeded in bringing a smile even to the faces of Government' members with his "hilarity," as he himself expressed it. In more serious vein were Mr. J, E\ B, Cotterill (Government, WanganuD, Mr. T, H, McCombs (Government, Lyttel* ton), and Mr. W, J, Poison (National, Stratford), who also took part in the debate, but each according to his party convictions added something to the weight of evidence for and against the Government. Thirt^nine members had participated in the debate when the adjournment was taken at 5,30 p.m. until 2,30 p.m, on Tuesday, the Govern* ment having an advantage of almost two to one, ..
