INTERNATIONAL HANDCRAFTS

Great -interest is being taken in the i exhibition of international handcrafts, which was officially opened on Wednesday by the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Rogers, who spoke of the work of Women's Institutes throughout Now Zealand, and expressed appreciation of the fine collection 'of exhibits and the attractive way in which they were displayed. The exhibits are arranged in courts round the walls, each court being decorated to represent a different country, and those in charge wearing the, appropriate national costume. The col- j lection includes beautiful Venetian glass, alabaster, leather, andT wood woi'k, and hand-made lace and embroidery, rug and basket work, toys, tent work, and many unique and exquisite exhibits too numerous to mention, representative of Italy, Canada, South Africa, Egypt, Switzerland, Holland, China, and the South Sea Islands. Outstanding in interest is the display of Maori handwork, including Maori baskets and mats of every description, some of them very old and rare. The Wanganui District Federation of Institutes has also shown some beautiful handcrafts, among which are thirtytiny figures, dressed to represent countrywomen of thirty different nationalities. A Farewell. To bid farewell to the matron. Miss i Murphy, who is leaving for Blenheim^ and Sister Brown, who is taking up Karitane work -'elsewhere, the house committee of the Stewart Karitane Home arranged a delightful little morning tea party at the home, those present being members of the general committee and the matron and sisters of the home. Personals. Miss J. R. Currie has been reelected unopposed, as a member of the Board of Governors of the Wanganui GJrls' College, representing the-parents of pupils.* Mrs. C. A. Bathgate, who has been spending a few days in Wanganui, has returned to Opunake. Miss Flora L. Drummond, of Wanganui, has been successful in gaining honours and top marks for New Zealand in the State examination held in June for maternity nurses. Mrs. Williams, New Guinea, is visiting Wanganui. Lady Hutchison, of Dunedin, is the guest of Dr.'and Mrs. F. C. Hutchison. Victoria Avenue. Mrs. W. J. Poison is visiting Wellington. ' Mrs. J. Hogg, Plymouth Street, left on Friday to attend tfie, wedding of her niece, Mis^ Doreen O'Neill, which will tak^ place at Ngatamahine today. Mrs. W. A. Oliver, of Cambridge, is staying with her mother, Mrs. S. J. P. Rutherford, Selwyn Street. Mrs. T. Harvey and Mrs. D. H. Rutherford, of Pahiatua, are the guests of Mrs. C. S. Babbage, St. John's Hill.
