SICKNESS BENEFIT

SOCIAL SECURITY CHARGE

"Will the Minister take wnat steps are necessary to exempt railway sickness benefits from obligation to pay Social Security tax?" asked Mr. S. G. Holland (National, Christchurch North), in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon in a notice of question to the Minister of Social Security.

Mr. Holland asked whether the Minister's attention had been drawn to a circular issued at the Hutt railway workshops to all members of the Government railway employees' sick benefit society advising them that any sick benefits paid to members must be regarded as income and become liable for the Social Security charge of a shilling in the pound.
