WAR VETERANS

NEED FOR FARM COLONY

A meeting of the Dominion Headquarters of the Soldiers' Civil Re-estab-lishment League.was held on Monday night, Mr. J. 1.. Goldsmith presiding.

The election of officers for the ensuing twelve months resulted as i'ol-lows:-7-Dominion president, Mr.. J. I. Goldsmith; Dominion vice-president, Mr. G. A. Hayden; executive committee, Messrs. J. I. Goldsmith, G. A. Hayden, B. F. Waters, and W. G. Harrison.

Reports of the league's activities in. the four main centres and in Gisborne were presented, and indicated that all the league's factories and shops were making satisfactory progress. A discussion took place on the urgent need for the establishment of a home or farm colony,, for war veterans who are no longer able to earn a livelihoodMany of them were today living in single rooms, under conditions which were far from satisfactory, it was stated. A scheme for the establishment of a farm colony to accommodate forty men on 100 acres of suitable land at Levin had recently been abandoned owing to the inability of various war funds to provide the necessary finance for the scheme. ■

It was decided to keen the matter steadily in view, and to investigate any suitable proposals for the establishment of a smaller scheme.

The Director of Education wrote advising that, subject to certain conditions, disabled soldiers iwould be given free tuition at technical schools and classes. This was considered to be very satisfactory and it was resolved to advise all branches of the league accordingly.

It was reported that arrangements were well in hand, for the erection of a stall at the Centennial Exhibition, where space had been taken for a Dominion display and sale of goods made by disabled soldiers. These goods were now being received from all parts of New Zealand, and they would make an outstanding exhibit, as the workmanship was t of a very high standard. A motion congratulating Mr. J. G. Young, who is a returned soldier, on his recent appointment as DirectorGeneral of the Post and Telegraph Department was carried.
