REFUGEE BURDEN
RELIEF FOR BRITAIN
"EMPIRE SHOULD DO MORE"
DEBATE IN LORDS
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.)
(Received July 6, 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, July 5.
Several references to the Dominions and the refugee problem were made during a brief debate in the House of Lords, which was initiated Iby Lord Lytton, who said that prijvate chanty in Britain had raised I £5,000,000 for refugees and that the j Empire should do more. There were •many undeveloped tracts in Australia, New Zealand, Rhodesia, and elsewhere. The Bishop of Chichester, the Rt. ißev. G. K. Allen Bell, commended Australian help and expressed the opinion that there was plenty of room in New Zealand also, if the imagination of the people there could be roused. The Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, in replying, said that the Home Office was examining the possibility of keeping some of the children, after they had reached 18 years of age, as British citizens. He agreed that refugees were an investment but said that the British Empire could not shoulder the burden alone.
