THIS WEEK'S SALES

BEEF VALUES HIGHER

Prime quality cow and heifer beef improved under the keen demand for a short entry at the Westfield stock sale yesterday. Poorer sorts and ox beef were firm. Veal was in short supply, and values rose sharply in consequence, prime quality selling very well. Pork was in short supply in the pig sale, in which the number entered was small. There was a sharp rise in prices, baconers remaining firm. The heavy entry of sheep sold at fully late rates, ewes showing a marked upward trend. Lambs, in fewer than average numbers, made late rates. Only a few prime quality bullocks were included in the small offering of fat cattle at the Burnside sale yesterday, the remainder being made up of medium sorts, and cows and heifers. The yarding barely sufficed to fill requirements, and competition was keen, with all bullocks showing an appreciation of £1 to £1 10s a head, and cows and heifers £1 a head. The small entry of store cattle of mixed qualitymet with keen bidding, and prices remained firm at late rates. Also forward in small numbers were good dairy cows, which found, a ready sale. Despite the good quality shown, prices eased from the high level of the previous sale by 2s or 3s a • head. Hoggets had an erratic sale also, values declining by 2s a head. Fat pigs were sold in keen competition. Porkers were up by 5s a head, and baconers ■ were also slightly firmer. JOHNSONVILLE SALE.
