TITAHI BAY STREET LIGHTS

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I concur with Mr. Thornton's criticism of the methods adopted by the Makara County Council regarding the Tireti Street light. Mr. Windley's letter is not a reply to the ratepayers' very justifiable complaint, and what is more, that which the chairman does say is by no means correct. What the ratepayers desire to know is: who authorised the removal of the light from its original position (after serving a very useful purpose for. some months) to a position in an unnamed plantation reserve, which is used as a back entrance by a very few residents. We are not disputing their right to a lamp, as mentioned at the end of my letter.

The visit, of the chairman and his colleagues on Saturday, February 18, was not at the invitation of my association, as stated. A visit by three councillors did .actually happen, and there is no doubi the site selected by my committee (as most suitable) was viewed and approved by the three councillors and the chairman himself, so I fail to see why that decision should be swayed by a few who would not take the trouble to visit us. We recollect that Saturday morning very well; when so much was promised and nothing done, and probably everything is now forgotten. No woriHer, then, a blunder has occurred in Tireti Street.

I have just heard, sir, this "light" question is now being reviewed, which is very pleasing news, as the matter is surely one not incapable of understanding. Whilst on the subject of street lighting I would like to mention that my committee considers that still more lights should be erected. Titahi Bay is growing very rapidly, is spreading over a wide area, so some residents have long distances to walk to the stores, where quite a lot of business is transacted after dark. —I am, etc.. L. U. CHAFFEY, Hon. Secretary, Titahi Bay Progressive Association. July 3, 1939.

"An Old. Titahi Resident" also refers to the shifted light,.and asks further: "Why does not the Makara Council do something towards making another way down to the beach? Over 500 cars are on the beach in the summer time, and there is only one way down and back. The council owns Tom's Road, and could do something that way. Surely the council could get Scheme 13 men. Why not put some of this available labour to making a motor camp and give the residents and others a chance to use the beach in comfort in summer time and at the same time make a small charge which would at least be a source of revenue?"
