NO ADVERTISING
COMMUNITY SINGS
CRITICISM BY MAYOR
Some pointed comment was made by the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) today on the introduction of a rule by the National Broadcasting Service prohibiting the announcement at community sings of the names of firms making donations or sending along goods for auction when the sing is being broadcast.
The rule was introduced some months ago and was first applied in the South Island.
The fact that restrictions have been placed in this way on: the acknowledgment of contributions was roundly criticised by the Mayor of Wellington at the local community sing today.
The reason for the prohibition of such acknowledgments at sings which are being broadcast by the National Broadcasting Service is that this practice is held to constitute an advertisement for the firm making the contribution and is not permissible.
The application of the rule has also caused comment in the South Island. It is considered that it will have the effect of reducing the popularity of the community sings and that donations will fall away, all to the detriment of those whom the sings are promoted to assist.
