MILITARY SERVICE
COMPULSION URGED
EX-SOLDIERS' VIEWS
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, June 15. At a public meeting called by the Mayor to hear a recruiting address by Colonel Puttick, a large attendance, mainly comprising ex-servicemen, adopted. Avith two dissentients, the following resolution: — "That this meeting thanks Colonel Puttick for his address, but urges him to report, through his superior officer, to the GoA'ernment that this meeting, Avhile in no Avay desirous of shirking just responsibilities, considers it unfair that returned soldiers again should be called upon to defend their country, while it is quite evident' that many fit men are not A'olunteering for such service. This meeting urges trie Government, without further delay, to introduce compulsory universal service and thus place the defence of the country upon the shoulders of all. It is the opinion of returned soldiers attending this meeting that returned soldiers generally favour compulsory universal service and will assist, by every possible means, the formation of an efficient defence force under such service."'
