OPEN COMPETITION

ROAD TO RECOGNITION

YOUNG ARCHITECTS' NEED

The following statement has been made by Mr. J. W. Mawson, Director of Town Planning, in reference to a Press Association report of remarks made by him in a recent address at New Plymouth:—

; "The necessarily brief summary of my remarks unfortunately seems to have conveyed a misleading impression of what I actually said. . As far as I am aware, there are no unemployed architects in New Zealand at the present time. On the contrary, I believe that the demand for architectural assistants far exceeds the supply. The point I was trying to make was that failing open competition among architects for the design* of public buildings young architects have very little. opportunity of making known their knowledge and ability to the public and starting practice on their own account, and are faced with the alternative of becoming hacks in the office of some established firm or of going to England or some other country where such competitions are held. I remarked, incidentally, that several brilliant young New Zealand architects have already made a name and fortune for themselves in England by winning such competitions."

Mr. W. Pearce, a -waterside worker, living .at 7.5 . Aro Street, suffered a lacerated wound to his head and concussion when he fell on the Rimutaka at 11.40 a.m. today. The Free Ambulance took him to hospital.
