PRISONERS SENTENCED

AUCKLAND, This Day

Two men who had been concerned in the use of explosives for safebreaking were among six prisoners brought before Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court today for sentence.

Darcy Maunsell Bennett, 22, and Patrick Edwin Grove, 24, were charged with breaking and entering warehouses. Bennett had further admitted a charge of theft and Grove one of receiving.

The Crown Prosecutor, Mr. V. R. Meredith, said that a quantity of gelignite and detonators was found in the bed of a room occupied by the prisoner. "Safe-blowing is fairly rife in the community at the present time," added Mr. Meredith.

The Judge sentenced Bennett to three years' hard labour, and Grove, who is a first offender, to two years' reformative detention.

Walter Kenneth Reeve, 43, was sentenced to eighteen months' reformative detention for the theft of £350 from the company by which he was employed.

Alfred le Huquet, 77, a veteran of the Boer and Great Wars, for indecent assault on a female at Huntly, was admitted to probation for three years. He is to be placed in the Salvation Army Home, the Judge remarking that the offence appeared to be partly due to senile decay.
