SPEAR AND COOPER
STILL DETAINED
CHARGE OF ESPIONAGE
PEKING, June 6.
The acting counsellor at the British Embassy, Mr. Lamb, on his return from Kalgan, said that the Japanese intended to hold the British attache, Lieutenant-Colonel Spear, and Lieutenant Cooper till an investigation of their cases had been completed. He was assured that they were comfortably quartered, but he was not permitted to see them.
The Embassy is now making representations to higher Japanese and British authorities.
A Tokio message says it is reported from Kalgan that Lieutenant-Colonel Spear and Lieutenant Cooper have been charged by the Japanese authorities with espionage.
