WORK NIGHT AND DAY
HAMPERED BY STRONG TIDES
(Received June 7, 10 a.m.)
LONDON, June 6,
It is understood that divers have fixed marking wires and other lines to the submarine Thetis, but that strong tides, which are churning up the mud considerably, are hampering the salvage work.
The operations are proceeding bynight and day, but the first attempt to lift the submarine is not expected to be made'until June 8.
The Admiralty has announced that a memorial service will be held in St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church tomorrow for relatives in London and members of the Admiralty staff who perished in the Thetis disaster. *
Either a Judge or an eminent King's Counsel will preside at the official inquiry, which will be held in Liverpool or Birkenhead. It will have High Court powers compelling the attendance of witnesses on oath and enforcing the production of documents.
The King and Queen have promised from Canada donations to the Lord Mayor's Thetis fund.
Cammell Laird and Co., builders of the submarine, have subscribed £5000 to the Thetis fund.
