PRINTING BY STATE

UNDUE PROPORTION

CONTRACTORS CONCERNED

"There is a strong feeling in printing circles in New Zealand that the Government is launching out unduly in the printing field," said Mr. M. G. C. McCaul -at the meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce last night, when reference was made to the new Government Printing Office. "There is in New Zealand, I am sure,- sufficient printing machinery to take care of all the requirements of this country, and a great deal more, and for the Government to erect a very large printing plant, as is proposed, is a duplication of machinery and altogether unnecessary.

"It would be far more economical for the Government to let its printing out to contractors and to use its present plant mainly for the printing of Government documents, secret documents that could not be let out," Mr. McCaul added. "We all recognise that the Government has much printing to be done the nature of which must be kept secret, but there is being done today, and we fear there is likely to be in the future a great deal more, much printing,of the type that should be done by private printing houses.

The president (Captain S. Holm) said he took it that Mr. McCaul was voicing the opinion of the Associated Chambers of Commerce.
