SCOUT NOTES

(By "Rama.") Patrol-Leaders Derek Turner and Jim Gyles, of the Karori troop, and Scout Rennick Raybourne, of the First Kelburn troop, have been awarded the King's Scout badge. Troop-Leaders Ron Blease, of the Wadestown troop, and Clive Crothers, of the St. Cu'thbert's troop, and Patrol-Leader George Perry, of the St. Cuthbert's troop, having passed all the required tests, have been awarded the First Class badge. .' 1 • ■ ! Commissioner for Training:. .'} . Mr. J. R. H. Cooksey ("LittleJohn"), Dominion Headquarters Comrriissioner for Training, continued his visits to troops in the Wellington area last week. In every case he gave splendid talks to the Scouts and most helpful suggestions. We wish it were possible for. him to visit every troop in the area in this way, but his time is limited, and this means that some troops are - just, lucky in having him with them for an evening. On Monday evening, St. Jude's, a newly-form-ed troop, was visited. Eight Scouts were found working keenly at their Tenderfoot tests. A memory training game followed, and . also provisional appointments of patrol leaders were made at "Little John's" suggestion, the boys chosen being Ted Mallish and John Fen wick. On Tuesday, accompanied by "Won Tolla," "Littlejohn" paid a visit to the Miramar troop and! found the. boys quite busy on work indoors; the older lads were receiving instruction and practising first-class first aid*.while most of the rest were engaged on work for the second-class tests. Several .ex-cubs appeared to be nearly ready to pass the Tenderfoot test and "Littlejohn" was seen to be giving some of these many hints. After various games, "Littlejohn" told the troop some of his experiences in visiting troops in various parts of New Zealand. On Friday evening, accompanied by "Rama,""Littlejohn" visited the Wadestown troop. The Scoutmaster was out of town, but this troop is used to carrying on on its own, under the charge of Troop-Leader Ron . Blease. There was patrol instruction, and there were Maori stick games, and then "Littlejohn" told yarns which were much enjoyed. Afterwards "Littlejohn" had a pow-wow with the patrol leaders, during which he expressed himself as very pleased indeed with the troop. Patrol Leaders' Meeting. Patrol leaders from several Wellington South troops met the District Scoutmaster last Wednesday to discuss ideas to help the work in. the district and in their troops. District Commissioner McCaul was present, also the Commissioner for Training, Mr. Cooksey, who made several useful suggestions. He quite obviously delighted his hearers with a new game and also with the talk he gave about the Patrol Leader's job. Metropolitan Rover Council. A meeting of the Metropolitan Rover Council will be held next Monday at Metropolitan Headquarters to finalise matters in connection with the Rover handball competitions. Jamboree Site. The North and Hills Districts will be on duty on the Jamboree site on Saturday. Twenty Scouts are required from these districts to do their bit. JLone Scouts. The Tara Patrol (Lone Scouts) held its first investiture last Saturday, when R. McDermitt was admitted to the great brotherhood. A batch of Kelburn Scouts being out Plimmerton way cordially invited the Taras to accompany them on a short hike. Signalling, firelighting, and cooking were the order of the- day, and finished i with the investiture. The Taras welcome Etay Scouts who care to come out to Plimmerton on the first Saturday of any month. North District Old Wolves. . The North District held their Old Wolves' meeting on May 23. In spite of heavy rain there was a good attendance. Old games in new forms were played, there were chats on last year's wood badge course (theoretical).,, and demonstrations of jungle dances of Baloo and Kaa. The next meeting will be held on the last Thursday of June in the Kelburn den at 7.30 p.m.
