"PULLING" HORSES
OUTBURST BY A JOCKEY
"I am sick and tired of this sort of business. It is a common occurrence for owners of beaten horses to say jockeys pulled them up," burst out a jockey, S. Shelton, in the stewards' room after the Moreton Handicap at Brisbane recently, states the Sydney "Sunday Sun and Guardian."
"Everybody in the town says that I pull horses for Pat Jennings and Jim Sklavos. It is wrong," he added.
Shelton had asked the stewards to clarify statements alleged to have been made by the owner-trainer J. Carroll regarding the jockey's handling of Assegai.
When the stewards' chairman, Mr. Lynch, opened the inquiry, he said that the stewards were acting on a complaint by Shelton that Carroll was telling people at the course that Shelton pulled Assegai up. Shelton told the stewards that Carroll was alleged to have said, while surrounded by a crowd of thirty or forty people, that Assegai "was the hottest thing seen at Ascot for years."
"I may have said something on the spur of the moment," said Carroll, "but I didn't say that." "Yes. you did," replied the jockey. Shelton added that friends of his were among the crowd of people at the time.
"I deny saying that." said Carroll. "I am perfectly satisfied with Shelton's handling of Assegai." Carroll, replying to the stewards, said he was disappointed with Assegai's performance.
"The point is, Shelton," said Mr. Lynch, "that we are satisfied with the way you rode Assegai, and Mr. Carroll is also satisfied." Shelton and Carroll then shook hands, and the stewards decided 10 take no action.
